Just got back from a fall bear hunt in Manitoba. E&D Outfitters out of Olha, 4 hours west of Winnipeg. I've had no luck in previous bear hunts but I saw a lot of bears on this one. They killed four 430+ lbers here last spring. Six guys in camp, including "Dr. Dave" Samuel from Bowhunter Magazine. One guy was on his first bear hunt, had never been on an outfitted hunt, had never been to Canada, had never seen a bear "live". Second night he killed a Boone & Crockett 400 lb boar. Only real big bear anyone saw. It was over 90 every day and dry. Better than the Midwest but not much. Trail cams picked up some big bears after 1 a.m. on some baits. At any rate, I sat a bait where there was a big brown boar. A decent black boar came in and stayed, off and on, for about four hours.
Finally, at seven, I decided to take him. I was in a quad-pod over some really thick brush, on a rise. The bait was about 18 yards away and 30' below me. Took a broadside shot and hit a bit high because of the angle. He ran off into the brush and I heard a crash then the death moan. I walked back to camp and got some help. He went about 10 yards. Complete pass-through down through both lungs. Weighed 220 lbs and will probably just miss Pope & Young by a tad. But he's my first bear and it was a great hunt. Dave killed a 270 lb. sow that night. Came in just at dark and had a big head and wide ears. He couldn't see her feet but took the shot. She was dry; no cubs. Six guys killed five bears. We couldn't find the other guy's; hit too far back.
