I got a request to eliminate coons getting into a friends crops. I see the hunting season on them opens today but don't much about calling them. My coon hunting experience is with a light checking farm pond edges, old barn silos, creek bottoms of southern PA or with coon dogs in the hollers of WV.
I’ve got my FoxPro caller with several coon sounds on it and was wondering if anyone has used calling to hunt them and had any tips for me. I’d love to put a hurting on them seeing they are destroying my friends crops but also because coons do a serious number on turkey nest.

I have called them in with a regular cottontail distress call. They usually dont come in real fast like a canine. We have called them in at night that way. A lot of time they hang out in the trees and listen to the call. Then we stalk them I have also had them come into a squirrel in distress call in the daytime. Best way to hunt them, without a dog, in my opinion is to simply go out at night, wait and listen. When you hear them, spotlight them and bang! However, if you really want rid of them, the only sure way to eliminate them is by trapping them . If your buddy is still having problems in the fall, I would be more than happy to set a few coon traps. Sean

As a hound hunter, I hate to see a coon shot by any other means but being treed by a good hound. Thats just my opinion, I do respect those who trap or even shine them. Their hides are worth so little, I haven't sent a hide to the Fur Harvesters auction in 4 or 5 years and probably wont ever again. If you put out a bait pile, you could probably drive in there, honk your horn, and then shine trees. Over sweet corn fields, after I cut loose my dog I shone the woodsline and see coon eyes maybe 75% of the time.
