I did it!!!! Shot my best buck ever tonight. 234# 9 pointer. I am guessing a 5 1/2 year old buck.
I new today was going to be a good day but no idea this good! I was talking to my neighbors son this morning and told him to leave his phone on as I would need help dragging a big one tonight!! Someone must have heard me say that for sure.
I went to work this morning knowing that I would take off early. I watched the front all morning and at about 1:30 I headed for the woods. I got to my spot around 2:30, grabbed ,y gun and climber and headed into the woods. I had two cameras to check. First camera showed several doe and two small bucks. Second camera had two buck several times over the past week. One was the handelbar buck. I had him on cam this morning. The other was the one I ended up shooting. All the pics were after dark so I headed towards the way they were coming in and found a tree I could climb and see a long way.
Around 4:30 I grabbed my can call and hit it tree times over a few minuets. I put it in my pack, picked up my gun and cradled it in my arm and started watching. I kept looking to my left as there was a rub line and you could see were they were crossing in some swale grass. I looked to my right and saw him step out from behind a hemlock. I thought he was farther than he was so I put the range finder on him. 120 yards. I stepped to the right side of the tree stand and put my left hand on the tree and used it for a rest. I got the cross hairs on him but he was facing right at me. I waited for what seemed like a long time until he turned slightly to his left. I put the cross hairs right in front of his right front shoulder and touched her off.
BOOOOMMMMM and then nothing. I did not hear the deer running and did not see it for a few seconds. When I did see him he was running right at me. He turned to my right to follow a stone wall instead of jumping it. I figured that was a good sign but he did not drop as I watched him crest a small rise to my right and disapear. I listened but heard no crash. I got down real quiet, left my gear at the tree and went to where I shot it. I could find nothing. I tried to look for where he went crossed by a downed log but found nothing. I realized that I had not reloaded so I went back to my gear and reloaded. Then I went to the spot where I saw him along the stone wall and found LOTS of blood. I followed it and lost all sign about 15 yards in front of the rise I saw him go over. Total distance he went at this point is about 135-140 yards. I started to get worried but as I walked over the crest of the hill he was laying about 20 yards away.
All I can say is AWESOME!!!!!!!
A HUGE thanks to my neighbor and his son who helped my drag it. And a big a thanks to the farmer who let me drive back through the field so I could cut my drag by 75%!!! He is getting some back strap for sure!!!
