This evening I stepped out to see if I can help a friend with coyotes on his property According to him, he had a “huge” one cross right behind his barn at 1 o’clock today. Well I got there and it turns out I left my FoxPro on so it was dead. I decided to slip out over the hill in front of his farm and watch a good size field from a high point.
Walking back I came up on 6 Jakes feeding in the middle of the field. I keep on walking to my high point and pretty much ignored them and they never ran off. They just keep feeding but away from me. Up on my high point, I stood there watching them and the field. Then about 100yds away down near the 6 Jakes I see more turkeys! 4 long beards are now feeding with the Jakes and they have not a care in the world I’m standing there watching them. This confirms my thoughts that turkeys do know how to read and definitely has someone supplying them with NH F&G regulation book or maybe just the season dates.
About 45 to and hour goes by and I notice a deer coming out in the next field over. Looking through the scope it looks to be a buck but I wasn’t sure. Then I catch another deer walking straight to me about 130yds away and this one was definitely a buck! Nice wide velvet rack. The other deer I saw pop out of the overgrown field starts running to the buck. Turns out it is a buck too but only with small velvet spikes.
As I start to leave, I used a small tree line to block my approach on the 2 bucks so I can get a better look. As I get to an opening, there they are at about 75yds feeding. Mosquitoes were getting bad so I just start walking from my tree line cover. As I break out into the opening, there’s another buck in velvets standing about 60yds from me. The 3rd buck was probably the twin to the spike buck.
What an AWESOME evening to be out seeing all this Gobblers lived and now I’m getting to see what bucks are running the farm.
